County Fair!
It's been quite awhile since I posted and a friend reminded me that I need to post! So, I'll talk about our county fair.
It's coming up at the end of September, so I've been spending some time just trying to pull some things together for it. I've mostly worked on crafts and I have some things I've made since last year's fair, so those are ok to enter as well. The day before entry day I'll do some baking and enter those things, too.
I try to enter lots of things every year. See, besides ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, entrants stand a chance of getting Grand Champion which travels to the regional fair. Then if they win there, they go to the State Fair. Also, there are money prizes involved with every place a person wins. It's not a lot, but if you enter a lot of items it can add up. See, entries aren't judged against each other so it's not a competition as such. Each entry is judged on its own merits as to quality, style, workmanship, originality, etc.
Our county fair includes 4-H projects, household arts, all sorts of fiber arts, various food categories like baking, jellies, dried foods. Also, sewing, farm crops, art & photography, livestock of all kinds, and a beauty pageant. I can remember years ago when they had spots for butter, cheese, soap, and other dairy products! Not so anymore but I still actually make these things here..LOL
Fairs like this are fast disappearing, and it's really a shame. People are losing touch with the skills that give us so many useful things in our everyday lives, and things that simply add beauty to our lives. Fewer people with these skills, who are willing to teach them to others, translates into fewer people to enter county fairs. I'd encourage everyone to contact their local Extension Office, County Agent, and Fair Board (if you have one for your county) and volunteer some time at your local fair. It's desperately needed, I assure you, and without volunteers the fair goes downhill.
I thought while I'm at it, I'd share some of the simple things I make for entering into the fair. These same items will later find their way into gifts to friends, family, church, and charities.
