BP Solar Decathlon
This is a topic that is really close to my heart and my basic belief that there are better ways to fuel cars and have power in our homes than by using fossil fuels or nuclear energy. I really believe in using renewable resources for powering our homes and cars, and try to read up on this a lot. I desire to have a home that is at least 50% powered by solar energy. I'd like to go even further and have it completely off the grid, but I'm still researching that possibility.
However, there are university students who are actively studying this possibility and the results of their studies and projects can be found at the BP Solar Decathlon. This is a contest where student teams from 20 universities around the world build houses that are energy efficient, operate only on solar energy, and are comfortably livable so that if you had one of these homes, you wouldn't feel as if you're giving up comforts of modern life.
The Solar Decathlon is held every other year. This year, the event will be at the National Mall in Washington, DC, from October 11 to 19. I was surprised to learn that BP is the ONLY energy supplier sponsor of this event. Shame on the other energy suppliers for missing a chance to improve the environment and how we live day-to-day. BP is quickly proving itself to be a leader in the field of alternative energy, and is a company we should keep a close eye on for future advancements in this area.
You can read the blog about this event, see pictures of the construction projects, and meet the teams involved in this worthwhile project. You can also learn more about what you, as an individual, can do to live in a more earth-friendly way at The Green Curve.
