Saturday News
~~Saturday, August 27, 2005~~
I fixed Danny some scrambled eggs and toast early this morning. His only requisite was that the eggs be "creamy", so I accomplished that by adding extra milk and butter.
Up in the morning he started hurting real bad in his chest. He'd had all his meds and took a pain pill. He laid down with his head elevated some. He said that helped. Still, it was hard to watch him be in pain like that. He did finally go to sleep, though, and napped quite awhile.
I was watching a few Ebay auctions as they were winding down. And, of course, I had PBS on watching the sewing shows. I also fixed up some auctions in TurboLister to upload tonight. Seemed almost like a normal Saturday for a little while.
I made a grocery list, with Danny's help. I asked him what *he* wanted to eat, and if I could get it at all I would. Mostly he wanted fruit juice and cream soups/chowders. So I made my list accordingly and went and bought groceries. I also went by a local fruit market and got him a cantaloupe (his favorite), some tomatoes, and some locally made organic cheese.
As I was going from the fruit stand to Walmart, one of my grown nephews called. He said he and his wife planned to come over and he'd work on our AC. See, it blows and it's fairly cool, but still wasn't doing the cooling job it was supposed to. He's worked in air conditioning for a long time in the past. I told him to give me a little while to get groceries and get home, which he did.
I got home and put away groceries. Just a few minutes later, my Mom, sis and brother in law drove up, and nephew and his wife were right behind them. We had a good visit while nephew worked on the AC. Of course, they hung around long enough for a good visit with nephew, too. The AC is blowing stronger and cooler now. The coils needed cleaning as did the drip drain.
By the time everyone left, Danny was done in again. Honestly, so was I. He laid on the sofa and napped. I sat in my rocker to watch some TV. You can guess what happened next - I was snoozing.
We both woke up a couple hours later and I fixed a pot of New England clam chowder for our supper. It was very tasty and Danny had two servings of it. I had gotten ice cream while shopping, so he snacked on that tonight. I was glad to see him eat like he did. I want to try to get him boosted up before the radiation and chemo really begin to take their toll.
See, the organic cheese is really delicious. It's creamy feeling in your mouth even though it's slice-able and shredable. (Are those words?) No preservatives. No artificial coloring. And made at the dairy not far from here where the cows live. Also, cheese is a good choice for Danny to eat and snack on. I figure, he might as well not eat chemicals since they are pumping him full of them now.
When the eggs I have in the fridge are gone, I'll be buying from a local farmer so we can have organic eggs.
And I'll be scouting around for more organic sources locally.
See, I don't figure any of us need the extra antibiotics, growth hormones, and estrogens found in a lot of commercially produced meats, dairy, cooking oils, and processed foods. Data and research? Zip. Nada. None. Just a hunch really - a hunch I've had for a long time and that has led me up to now to half-heartedly try to eliminate such things from our diet. For instance, no margarine, no "vegetable" oil, nothing with soy in it if at all possible. Also, greatly reduced the amount of pork we eat but increased the amount of buffalo. Eating more wild fish. Using whole grains as much as possible for bread, biscuits, and even pancakes. (Grinding my own wheat for that.) Better salad greens - no more iceberg lettuce. That stuff is tasteless anyway.
If you think of it, pray for a little girl named Sara. She's in the hospital in St. Louis. My kids used to work at her mom's restaurant. She's only 7 years old and has ecoli. She's been really sick in ICU for a couple of weeks, and is now in a coma. We are all just heartbroken over this.
