Long tiring day
What a day! I opened this morning, arriving at 4 AM as usual. I had a good crew, so didn't have too many problems early.
The schedule showed two or three people had called in the night before, and two just plain didn't show up, but I felt I could cover without them. It was a busy morning, but not overwhelming. Then, one of the crew called in 20 minutes before she was supposed to be there. Her reason was understandable but it left me short handed. I had been counting on her to be there and fill some positions while others took breaks.
I was scheduled to be there until noon, but that just didn't happen. What did happen is that I didn't get to leave until nearly 5 PM! Why? Because, although other managers were there, they left at their appointed time. There was a third manager who should have taken the shift and let me go home, but he stayed occupied with other things which meant I still ran the shift. That is, until I insisted that I be allowed to leave. (He is a manager who ranks higher than I do.)
I explained to him that I was exhausted. That my legs were hurting. And that I really needed to go home since I open again in the morning and would like to get some rest. Any other ideas for how I'd spend my afternoon were already shot.
When I finally did get home, I found my power was out and the AC hadn't run in quite awhile. The house was hot and stuffy. The dog was hot. I checked the breaker box and, sure enough, the whole-house breaker had tripped. Not sure why except that the high heat had caused it. I turned it back on and the AC started running. Thankfully, the house is small so it didn't take long for it to cool down.
Now, I sit here almost in a daze - tired, really too tired to sleep well - and achy all over.

Omigosh, Sis. What a day! And how horrible for your dog...wonder how long she suffered the heat? Lately, if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all, huh? I sure hope things start looking up for you soon! You deserve a break from crappiness.

I think Dog took it better than I did. She lays on the cool floor a lot anyway, and it's shady around here. But for me, walking into that house it was pretty stifling! Yes, it's been crazy lately for sure!

Don't let them take advantage of you at work like that! Big corporations know that they can only run if *somebody* will always go above and beyond the call of duty. That doesn't have to be you!

You are exactly right, Jann. Which is the reason why I'm going to be pulling back. I actually started that awhile ago, but got roped in that day. It's not happening again.
