Woman Widowed and Alone
Thanks to my friend Christina Beach for the post.
Having lived in the relatively safe suburbs for the majority of my adult life I have not given security a second thought other than to make sure the doors were locked at night. When we left on the weekends or extended trips, we’re sure the lights are left on at night, the newspapers picked up and made arrangements for the neighbors to retrieve the mail. My husband was 6’ 2” and not at all bashful and our two sons mimicked their Dad’s physical proportions and were high school football stars. I felt safe in our home with my men.
The boys eventually left home to go to college and tragically my husband became ill and after a long struggle passed away. I then found myself to be a woman living alone with no safeguards and there were times that I felt a total lack of security. After a string of burglaries in our once safe suburban neighborhood, I decided to beef up the door locks, installed motion detectors, and installed a Home Security alarm.
I went to a security seminar and learned some valuable tips about keeping safe as a woman living alone. I never mention casually that I live alone, if I need a tradesman for repairs, I ask a friend to come over, I keep the curtains drawn and a male voicemail message.
