Class reunion activities
While I have posted pictures of my recent 40th class reunion, I haven't actually told you how the day went.
First, there was a brunch for the ladies at a former classmate's home. She and her husband both graduated with us. The home is fairly new and they are loving the location -- in a neighborhood but still out of town.
She prepared lots of food including mini-ham and cheese sandwiches, mini muffins, a wide variety of fruits and cheeses, and a lovely cheese log served with crackers. She provided orange juice and coffee for beverages. It was all laid out on a fall decorated table.
In the early afternoon we all met at our old high school building. In 1968, we were the first class to ever attend this modern structure. At that time, there was a sunken portion to the library (media center), sound proof booths in the center for listening to music or watching films, and an open feeling all around. It is located in the very center of the hexagonal shaped building and there were doorways but no doors leading into it from every direction. Since my high school days, they leveled up the sunken part to match the rest of the floor, put in actual doors, and the sound booths are now office or storage space. In fact, none of the classrooms had doors and the walls didn't go up to the ceiling. That's all changed, too.
At the back of the building was a "commons area" where, at one time, there was a fountain, vending machines, and tables for those who wanted to eat lunch, spend break time, or just hang out for awhile before school started. Since the old days, the fountain has been covered, the machines and tables are gone, and there are now lockers along the back side of the area.
Speaking of lockers, the first year we went there, the lockers were nothing more than cabinets along the halls. No locks. They wanted to use the "honor system" and have every locker able to be opened without having to unlock it. That changed pretty quickly and the following year, we were issued keys. Locks had been installed. Apparently, not enough students had honor.
This building is set to be torn down and a new, more conventional building put in its place.
That night, we had a gathering at a local restaurant that has dining on the rooftop. Of course, you can also go inside to the same-level group dining area. Light snacks were provided and it was no-host bar. A slide show gave us views of our old high school days and activities while we mingled and chatted well into the night. It was originally scheduled for 6 pm to 9 pm, but really didn't end until after 11 pm! There was a DJ who also played guitar and sang songs from the 60s. So many of us danced and had a great time just being like kids again, I wish we could get together sooner!
