Sis' yellow dye allergy

I never realized before Sis was told she is allergic to yellow dye in foods just how many foods have it included in the ingredients. Foods that really don't even need any extra coloring have yellow dye in them. Like yellow cake mix, which would be yellow with the addition of whole eggs anyway. In fact, most foods that would have a buttery yellow appearance anyway wind up being boosted up with yellow dye. Why?

I know from making pickles that I could use Turmeric, which is also Curcumin, to produce a yellow color in them. Annatto seeds produce a yellow color that can be used in cheeses and other foods. Both of these coloring agents are completely natural and Sis would have no adverse effects from consuming foods that contain them instead of the chemical yellow dye that's normally found in food.

Perhaps it's up to consumers to demand fewer chemical agents in foods and more natural, harmless ingredients for improving color. Yellow dye is a known allergen producing severe reactions in the persons affected. Reactions include everything from severe hives to anaphylactic shock. I figure consumer demand brought about all the coloring agents, consumer demand can also get rid of them.

I wrote about this very thing on my recipe blog last year, if you would like more information. This could be something that affects you, so encourage manufacturers to eliminate chemical dyes and embrace natural coloring agents in their production methods.
