Truck update
Son and a friend worked on the truck for several hours the other night. It was supposed to be a two hour job. Nothing ever works out that way, though, does it?
They did get one wheel bearing put on - the one that's closest to the hub. When they tried to remove the smaller, outer beating, they discovered it wouldn't all come off. The ring that was part of the old bearing apparently welded itself to the wheel spindle. Nothing they did has budged it so far.
Yesterday, Son borrowed a puller tool of some kind from a local parts store. However, he couldn't get it to grab hold of the immovable ring so he could force it off. Today he's trying to see if he can borrow another kind of tool from a mechanic friend. Don't know if the guy even has one or not, but if the ring can't be pulled off then we're left with only a couple of options.
- Cut the ring off, regrind the spindle, then put new threads on it so the wheel, etc. can be put back on.
- Buy a new spindle assembly, which could be a couple of hundred dollars.
I really hope they can manage to get the ring off the spindle today. I've been without my truck for a week and a half now. I can't go to Mom's on these days off I have until it's fixed and I'm afraid the days will run out! I suppose I could get a pair of Naot shoes and take off walking up there, but a hundred miles is a bit too much of a trek!
I was hoping to head up there today, but as it stands now, it could be tomorrow or later. I'm very disappointed.
