The old green house
A number of years ago, we had an old green house. No, not a greenhouse...a green house. We decided to do the remodeling on it ourselves. The first thing to do was to raise the back of the house with whole-house jacks and get the floor as level as possible.
See, this house was built before 1900 and was resting on hand-hewn logs - huge ones. But the back of the house had dropped significantly so it had to be lifted up again. We did a lot of work on that alone, but never did get the floor completely level. It was better, but you could still see a definite downhill slope in the back bedroom.
We also had to rip out and replace the floors in several rooms. We built cabinets in the kitchen, had electrical work done in the form of putting in a bigger breaker box and several new circuits. (The original was just 3 circuits for the whole house.)
We also turned the smallest bedroom into a generous sized bathroom. And we added a staircase to the attic area and made part of that into another bedroom.
We put money, time, and love into the redo on that old green house. However, we are not and were not carpenters in any way, shape or form. Everything we did was a learning experience. Would I do it again? Possibly, but next time I'd contract some Local Contractor Services to do the more complicated tasks of plumbing and building floors, and even house leveling.
Since we had a tin roof that did leak in a couple of places, I'd also hire someone to install a new tin roof. Tin, because it lasts a long time and it was in keeping with the old house's style and age. I'd let some contractors do some of that work because they could do it so much faster and with better quality than we could.
Do you have a building project that needs doing?
