Gold dollars

It seems like lately, we've been getting a lot of gold dollar coins at work. Hardly a day goes by when we don't have several to put in the deposit at night. At least they're not like the $10 gold coins one individual passed off to us. The bank said they weren't legal tender and held them. The manager in charge that night had to supply the money herself to make up for that faux pas.

When I saw them and picked one up, it felt too light to be a real coin. I don't know if it was some kind of commemorative coin or a collectible or what, but something about the coin just didn't seem right. We probably could have checked with a reputable, professional coin dealer to find out for sure.

I'd advise anyone who has questions about gold or silver coins to learn more about them before they assume they have the face value that's stamped on them. With so many minted gold and silver coins in circulation, it's easy to be fooled by ones that aren't real.
