Pleasant evening on the porch
We are finally getting a bit of a break from the extreme high temperatures and humidity. I'm able, once again, to sit out on my front porch in the mornings and evenings without suffering so much. I'm glad to be back out here.
It's so pleasant to be able to hear the birds and insects as they go about their survival business. The air is still right now, but earlier there was enough of a breeze to make the wind chimes serenade me as I mused.
Son-in-law came over earlier and mowed my too-tall grass. It filled his bagger several times, but it's all neat now. I put the clippings in the compost heap and watered it down good. I have earthworms under the heap, so I'll probably need to stir the clippings every few days in order for them to get the most benefit from it as they turn it into wonderful soil for my pots and beds.
The raised beds I put out in the spring could have really used the vermicompost instead of the raw clippings I used. I think it heated up too much in the beds. Some of what I planted thrived, but other things just died. I assume it's from the heat generated as the clippings decomposed. Plus, we've had several weeks of record high temperatures and no amount of watering really helped.
