Sleet! But not much
Thursday night, just after Mom and I walked back to her house, we got sleet. Yuck! I am not a fan of winter weather to begin with, but most especially not of frozen precipitation. At least it didn't last long and there was nothing on the ground the next morning.
That night, the temperatures dipped below freezing to about 27 degrees. During the day, however, the sun came out and it warmed up to reasonable levels by afternoon on Friday. Since then, it's been frosty in the mornings but the daytime temperatures have been tolerable -- mid to upper 50s.
That's my kind of winter weather. Lots of sunshine and highs in the 50s I can live with. But I know that even this won't last. By January and February, we'll have much colder weather. If the upcoming year plays out like years past, we'll probably have an ice storm or two combined with a few inches of snow. Central Arkansas winters tend toward ice, for the most part. Not all winter long, but at least a couple rounds of the slippery stuff that is bad enough to close highways and increase accidents by those travelers who think icy highways are just as safe to travel at high speeds as dry ones.
During those times, the news is full of films and stories about multi-car pile-ups, jack-knifed big rigs, and cars by the dozens off in medians and ditches. As for myself, I just stay off the roads until they are clear. Seems sensible to me.
